Research objectives
My goal is to further characterize the effects of pyridoxine overdose on the developing chicken embryo. If the lesion only targets specific subgroup of neurons, the treatment can be used as a tool for future developmental studies. As an undergraduate in the Physiology Program at SIU, I used immunohistochemistry to determine the effects of pyridoxine on apoptosis in the dorsal root ganglion during development. Additionally, I assayed the effect of pyridoxine on the size distributions of axons in muscle and skin innervating nerves. I am currently utilizing electrophysiological nerve recordings to investigate the subpopulations of neurons whose function is diminished after pyridoxine treatment.
Currently, Yuri is studying medicine at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.
